I chose this picture for this page because it represents the relationship between Taylor Swift's "Love Story" and the actual book. The apples are both the idea, while the colors are the differences.
Similarities and Differences
Taylor Swift's "Love Story" shares some qualities with Romeo and Juliet, but there are also some differences.
Similarities:
- The characters in Romeo and Juliet are young. In the song, there is a lyric that goes like this..."We were both young when I first saw you."
- The lyric above also relates to Romeo and Juliet in another way. The story takes place in summer, too.
- In the original story, Romeo and Juliet meet at a party, and they meet in a party in the song, too. "See the lights, see the party, the ball gowns."
- Another similarity is that they probably would get into trouble if their parents caught them. In the song, there is a lyric that goes like this..."We keep quiet 'cause we're dead if they knew."
- Now, in the story, Romeo and Juliet say that they are each others everything, and this is also true about the song. "But you were everything to me"
- In the play, after Tybalt is killed, everyone in Juliet's family says that they should hate Romeo. In the song, it is also mentioned..."they try to tell me how to feel."
Differences:
- One of the most famous scenes in this play is the balcony scene. The scene instead of a balcony takes place in a garden..."So I sneak out to the garden to see you."
- Never in the story does Romeo and Juliet's father speak about Romeo dating Juliet..."And my daddy said, "Stay away from Juliet."
- Juliet never begs Romeo to stay, in the story, but in the song..."I was begging you, "Please don't go."
- Never in the story does Romeo or Juliet ever talk about running away before Romeo gets exiled, but in the song, it is part of the chorus..."I'll be waiting; all that's left to do is run."
- The most important difference between the play and the song is that, in the play, they don't get married or live happily ever after. They die. In the song, they get married and the dad starts to like Romeo and they live happily ever after.
